Legal Term Domain name hijacking is A hijacker in this context is one who purchases one or many domain names, and attempts to sell them later on to the highest bidder -- often a corporation owning a famous trademark that is identical to the second level domain being sold. This disparaging term is generally reserved for those individuals who purchased the name with no business purpose in mind other than to sell it to the trademark owner or keep it from the hijackers competitor. These latter kinds of cases are referred to as reverse domain name hijacking cases, and some have speculated that this conduct by companies may be met with cancellation of their mark under the doctrine of trademark misuse.
