Natural Expansion

What is it? A doctrine whereby rights in a trademark are granted based on expected use rather than actual use. Expanded rights under this doctrine are granted only when a company is already using the trademark in one area, and can demonstrate that it planed to expand to the claimed area. This doctrine is ineffective if there is a pre-existing federal registration held by another party in the claimed area.
